Casting 2

CastingThe characters we had to cast for were:

Character 1:· Character one is a convict who is up for parole and released. The character is very sure of himself and cocky but also intelligent and quick thinking. We pictured an older man who is a bit daunting yet has an air of confidence. He also had to look a bit of a ‘Hard man’.

Character 2:· Character two was not to be as physically different and instead to show more through his personality as we intended him to be a family man with more commitments to his life. Not as care free as he might have been but still a confident character.

Character 3:· Character three is the youngest of the three who has settled into a job. The character is meant to be quite scatty and nervous and very unsure of his own ability although he is very intelligent. This character should be slighter of frame than the other two and look ‘geekier’.

sound

This is how we came up with our opening sequence song

first of all Craig (our musician) gave us a few songs to have a listen too and decide what we liked and what we didn't like: these are the songs he gave us:

AC-DC - Beating Around the Bush
AC-DC - High Voltage
Blue Öyster Cult - Don't fear the reaper

We really liked the sound of Blue Öyster Cult - Don't fear the reaper (below)

we then asked Craig to have a go at making his own version of the Don't fear the reaper song and here it is:

we did like it but we thought as a group that it wasnt quite what we were looking for. We then gave him a song out of oceans 13 that was what we were looking for. he then put the two songs together and came up with the song below

We really liked this but thought it was a bit too short so we asked him to add to it

This is the longer version, but we thought it was missing something. we also thought it had abit too much of the electric guitar in it.

This is our shorted final song. it is also unmixed and is in need of a little tweeking.

this is it! the final mixed song to our opening sequence

The Newspaper

Newspaper prop in Sequence 2 – scene 11
I then had to add an image of our fraudster to the front page. This was quite easy but i had to rearrange the page a bit to make the image fit. The image we chose was this one below:
The last thing i had to do before printing was to make the image proper tabloid size which is 54cm x 37cm. and here is the final result:

1) First of all i took a photograph of an old newspaper i had:

2) I then uploaded the photograph into Adobe Photoshop, i then cropped the image and stretched it out.

3) I then set about getting rid of one of the lead stories about Frank Lampard’s wife leaving him(bottom right of the image.) I did this by selecting the area i wanted to delete, deleting it and then used the paint brush tool to fill the space in with the white/gray colour of the newspaper.

4) I them started adding our own story. First of all i added text, i added a headline and a sub headline, but borrowed the introduction to the story from the Jose Marinoho story on the opposite page.

Oceans 11

Oceans 11

George Toothill

As the makers titles come along the screen we know even before any visual pictures have appeared we know this film is going to be something about crime or hustle. As the diegetic voices start to kick in we get a vibe of a prison. I know this because as we are listening to the dialogue we hear little things that might relate to a prision like, “Man walking” and the restless noises coming from the cells. From this we then see a man walking towards a chair in what looks like a convict’s uniform from this mise on scene we then hear some voices start talking about how “Mr Ocean” was caught up in a fraud case. This then gives us the main hint about what the narrative is going to be in this film. We guess from the convocation that this is Mr. Ocean’s parole hearing. We also get another hint at the narrative when Mr. Ocean is funny towards one of the parole officers. This gives us the impression that the film is going to be funny. One of the parole officers then asks Mr. Ocean what he would do when he got released, at this moment a upbeat soundtrack starts. We then see Mr. Ocean collect all his stuff from a police officer.
Mr Ocean then walks out of the police station a free man. As he walks out of the door we notice a difference between light and dark. The light in my opinion represents freedom and the dark gives us the impression of prison and being locked away. The titles of the film directors and some of the cast then starts appearing on the bottoms left of the picture. As Mr. Ocean walks out of the police station the camera always seems to be behind him. It then switches and the camera is at the front of Mr. Ocean as he is walking away from the police station.
The next scene that we see is an extreme long shot of a city. This gives us an idea of where the next scene is going to be set. It then cuts to an interior shot of what looks like a casino. This gives us a feeling that Mr Ocean is in los Vegas. Because is world renowned for its casinos. Then a edited in title comes up telling us we are in Atlanta Mr Ocean played by George Clooney then walks over to a blackjack table and asks to change some money into gambling chips. The dealer changes to a new man and George asks the man is his name is frank to which he replies “no, its Ramon as you can see right here.” Raymond then tells George where to meet him later. This tells us that George and frank have met before and that they are old friends. The scene moves to another part of the casino and George is sat with a drink and reading an article about casinos. This tells us that George is very interested in casinos. Frank then comes to talk to George about when George got out of prison.
The scene cuts again and we are outside and George is on the phone to a police officer about his first day out on parole. The parole officer then asks George if he has left the state to which George replies” no,” but before we notice that on the sign outside the police station it said that he was in New Jersey but now he seems to be in Atlanta which is in another state of America. This gives us the hint that George isn’t scared of breaking the law.

city of gods

City Of Gods

In the opening sequence of city of god we find out a few useful things about what is going to happen in the film. First of all we watch as a montage of shots is unveiled before us. This montage consists of numerous shots of a knife being sharpened and then it cuts to a series of shots of an old man playing a musical instrument. We then see that there is a large group of men preparing and cooking some chicken. At this point there is the diegetic music coming from the old man’s musical instrument but also there is the noise of the man’s laughter and excitement. The montage changes again and now cuts to the man cooking the chicken to a live chicken that is waiting to be slaughtered. As it looks on in fear we notice this chicken’s heart is racing because he obviously knows his terrible fate. The camera swings around and we are now presented with the chickens leg and to the string that is tied around his foot. The camera work and editing make clear that the string on its leg is coming undone using the camera to focus on the leg. The editing in this montage is very fast as there is a load of action going on here and its trying to build our heart rates up for what’s going to happen next. The chicken then escapes and then we are introduced to I’m guessing one of the main characters. The man then pulls a gun out and through this mise en scene we realise these men aren’t good men. As the chase begins more and more men start pulling guns out. As the chase goes on more people start joining the race to get the chicken back and bullets are now fired at the chicken. Throughout the sequence we see two camera shots feature very heavily one of them is a tracking shot where someone is tracking the chicken through the streets with a camera and the other is of an aerial shot, looking down on the chase as its going on
As the chase is going on we meet two young men walking down stairs in a city. The diegetic noise of the guns and music has now disappeared and has now being replaced by dialogue. To me this shows that these two are going to feature more in the film as they have speaking roles maybe these are the main characters or at the very least they must have very good roles to play in this film. The gang chasing the chicken then come out of an alley way looking for the chicken. The action is then slowed right down as the gang leader exits from the alley. At this point the whole action is slowed right down as the man takes centre stage in the street. The camera then switches to one of the new young men that came down the stairs. The camera spins around this man’s head from a low angle looking upwards. This gives us the impression that the man maybe important for one reason or another then camera then focuses on the gang again this time it’s a long shot of them all lined up in the street. The gang leader asks the young man if he would get the chicken for him. At this point as the man is trying to gather the chicken for the gang we notice that the young man has a camera around his neck. As the camera is using a shallow focus on the man we notice that a police car pulls up behind the camera man. Some of the gang members try to run off but are called back by the leader. The camera work then changes to a close up of the lone boy the camera then starts moving around the boy in a matrix style shot. This makes the audience feel for the boy as it shows he is caught in the firing line between the gang members and the police.
We then have a superimposition flash back where we are sent back to what looks to be a third world country where a boy is playing football and is in net. The camera circles the boy as the imposition is going on. We are then fully introduced to who the man is. A voice over then comes over the dialogue and he reveals who he is.

Italian job

Italian job
George Toothill

At the start of the Italian job we see an establishing shot over the hills of Italy. We start to here a car noise coming from the hills and the camera slowly tilts down revealing spaghetti of roads, and the beauty of the Italian mountain. The camera then cuts and reveals a long shot of a red car going over a large secluded bridge. It cuts again but this time we are in the front of the car and can hear the Lamborghinis v8 purr. After a good 30 seconds a non diegetic soundtrack starts to play. It is one of the most recognisable sound tracks in the world and is called “on days like these.” Over the next 3 minutes the camera changes about 20 different times revealing loads of different camera shots and angles. From following the car from behind to us feeling like we are actually driving the car throughout these 2-3 minutes there are plenty of shots of the red Lamborghini. We then take a seat back with the driver as the titles start flashing across the windscreen. Up to here we feel as this man driving the car is going to be our main character.
The titles then stop as the red car starts to enter a tunnel. As the car speeds past the camera the camera cuts to the other end of the tunnel where a man dressed in black is holding a wraith and is looking towards to tunnel where a JCB digger is at the mouth it then cuts back into the tunnel where it is total darkness the next noise we hear is the noise of the screeching breaks of the car and the impact into the digger. The tunnel then lights up with the explosion from the car. We then sees and hear the JCB reversing back with the wrecked car hold on the front. This time we notice that there are men on top of the bridge holding guns. From this point on we realise that these people are the mafia and this gives us a huge hint at what the narrative is going to be in the film. This tells us the genre of the film too we can see that it is going to be a crime/ gangster film full f guns, fights and money. We then see the wrecked car from a different angle and the camera zooms in on a important looking man standing next to the car from the mise en scene and the way the camera moves into this man i get the impression that this is the mafia boss. The bulldozer then turns around and throws the car down the cliff and into the river below. The mafia boss then picks of the wraith from the man next to him and throws it down after the car as a sign of respect.
